Question/Comment:
I am 55 years old. Ihave had hypothyroid problems for years.About 12 years ago, I was put on synthyroid and felt like someone had their hands around my neck. Told the dr. ,e saoid that my blood levels showed that was what I needed. Now last November I was put on levothyroxine. Another dr. raised my dosage and I had a adverse reaction. It was lowered and I seem to be doing fine. Is synthriod and levothyroxine the same thing?

Answer/Reply:
I too have been on levoxyl (generic synthyroid) for a few years. The pharmacy that I use made a mistake with my last refill, and gave me levothyroxine. They asked me to bring the bottle
to them a.s.a.p. and the will give the next refill free of charge, after that I phoned my Dr. and he
told me that all 3 drugs are alike as far as the main ingredient, the by products are different and only known by the manufacturer.
Another important bit of information which I recently learned is, the pharmacy's change manufacturer's quite frequently (cheaper prices) yet we pay the same price. So please,
make a request to your pharmacy (request that they put into the computer) that if they choose
to change manufacturer's, you are to be informed before they fill your prescription.
I am sorry that this is so long, but it is because I care :)

Question/Comment:
I AM 42 YEARS OF AGE. AND IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 3YRS SINCE I HAVEN'T TAKING MEDS FOR MY THYROID. IT IS COMPLETELY REMOVED AND EVER SINCE I HAD TAKEN MEDS IN THE PAST FOR IT. I HAVE BEEN NOT MY SELF, I SEEM TIRED AND DID NOT WONT TO EAT AND VERY RESTLESS AND VERY MOODY AND ALL OTHER SIGNS THAT COME WITH IT ALSO HAIR LOSS AND VERY DRY SKIN.
I COULD NOT AFFORD THE MED AND DOCTOR APPT. TIMES ARE GETTING ROUGH.
SO I WENT TO A HEALTH STORE, LIKE SUN HARVEST AND FOUND OVER THE COUNTER
PRODUCT, WHICH I TAKE THROID FACTORS AND L-TYROSINE PLUSE. AND I FEEL BETTER THAN BEFORE. MORE ENERGY AND LESS HAIR LOSE, BUT THE WEIGHT A FEW MORE POUNDS. SO AM I DOING THE RIGHT THING, TAKING MEDS OVER THE COUNTER, INSTEAD OF PRESCRIPITION DRUGS?

Answer/Reply from iGuard:
THROID FACTORS AND L-TYROSINE PLUS are sold as a nutritional supplements and do not undergo the efficacy or safety studies that FDA-approved medications undergo. Thus, there isn't a lot of information available about how well these products work or what kind of side effects they have.
People with thyroid conditions really need to work with a doctor to manage their condition - routine follow-up now can help to prevent more serious conditions and more expensive treatments down the road. If hypothyroidism is not treated, it can raise your cholesterol levels and make you more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
If you don't have a free health care clinic in your area, maybe your local hospital or your previous doctor can help you find more affordable health care and medications or they may direct you to an advocacy group that might be able to assist you.

In answer to the last question:
I have an underactive thyroid and I do not have insurance. I go to a clinic where all I have to pay is 15 dollars a visit and I get my levothyroxine from walmart which is only 4 dollars. I get my blood checked every six months to make sure the dosage should stay the same. I would recommend you to find a cheap clinic around your area and get your prescription from walmart. I do not know much about natural remedies but you are taking a chance by experimenting. I encourage you to do all of the research you can if you go for a non prescribed remedy.
